If you are running for office this year in a rural or suburban area, you will soon be ordering yard signs for your Fall campaign. And by the time election day rolls around in November, yard signs will be everywhere.

So how do you stand out amid the clutter? Today, a few tips on how to do that, better serve your campaign and your cause.
- Use a distinctive color logo, surrounded by white space. Yours will look better if it done by a professional artist. It should be the same logo you are using on your website, handouts, business cards and other campaign literature so that your brand is consistent.
- Use your picture. Voters have trouble remembering mere words slapped on a piece of cardboard. Or any name for that matter when they are seeing hundreds of yard signs driving down the road. Your picture will help voters remember you.
- Use your slogan. Put it on the poster. Help the voter associate your picture with a message.
- Use material that will withstand a soaking rain or inclement weather.
Will this cost a little extra? Yes. It will also provide a stark contrast with the other boring yards signs surrounding it, and will therefore be noticed and better advance your cause.
Do you need to do yard signs? If you don’t you’ll catch endless grief from your volunteers, contributors, friends and family. So yes, for that reason alone they are a good idea. Do not hesitate to ask your donors to put up a yard sign. And make sure you take a supply to every speech, every event, every rally. Those volunteers you have going door to door should always have a supply—any time a voter is identified as a supporter, the volunteer should ask for permission to put a sign in their yard.
A yard sign in someone’s front yard means a lot more to a voter than a yard sign placed along a busy highway.
