How to Run for Office – Tip 5
Tips and Tricks that will Help Give You a Competitive Edge.
Tip #5. Look People in the Eye When You Meet Them.
Ever meet a politician only to see the politician looking over your shoulder for someone more important to talk to?
Really endearing isn’t it?
Even Presidential candidates must do retail politics, and there is an art to it and it starts with eye contact.
At my church people come to the altar at the end of the service to take communion.
The minister at the church will hand the wafer to each member of the parish, but he does a little something extra. He’ll look them in the eye and say their first name—and without losing eye contact will say the words “the body of Christ the bread of heaven” and then again without losing eye contact place the wafer in the hands of the parishioner.
In the span of 5 seconds it takes to do that, the minister establishes intimate contact, and for some, it is the most memorable and touching part of the service.
To most people, the nicest word in the English language is their name. When you meet someone, look them in the eye, repeat their first name, and keep your eyes on theirs as you tell them what a pleasure it is to meet them.
Try it. You might be surprised how many volunteers you’ll secure by offering 5 simple seconds of your undivided to attention to the person you are talking to.
