Lessons in Leadership

Mattering is a Choice. Making a difference for your company, your family, your community or someone else is a choice. The more you do, the more you will want to do, for making a difference fills the mind and the body with positive energy that is contagious.

In my junior year of high school, I took an elective course in public speaking. At the time I was a very non-serious student, grossly corpulent and my self-esteem was non-existent. After bombing on my first two minute address to the class, my teacher looked at me and said he was going to make me someone I wasn’t. He invested hours in me before school and after class. Then recruited me to join the speech team. Then the debate team. As self-esteem rose, the weight came off and the grades improved. My senior year I became a straight A student and was elected President of my Senior Class thanks to the speaking skills he’d taught me. At the graduation ceremony I was named the school’s top debater and public speaker. I shall be forever grateful to Jim Robbins for making a difference in what I became, and most important, helping me develop talents that allowed me to make a difference for others.

There world is filled with people who choose to make a difference. If you are not already, today is a good time to start. The opportunities are abundant. For your employer. For your stockholders. For you customers. Your community. A church. A soup kitchen. A child without parents who needs an adult who cares. Companies that encourage the ‘make a difference everyday’ mindset are the ones that thrive.
