There is a hard truth about running for office. Voters don’t care about you. They care about what you are going to do for them.
There is a hard truth about life. The world doesn’t care about you. The world cares about what it can get from you.
I was reminded of that truth when I attended a recent candidate forum. One of the candidates running for office talked only of himself, the hardships he had endured, the obstacles he faced, the identity group he belonged to.
I share this to illustrate a truth about running for office.
If you want voters to care about you, they must first know you care about them. That is what your campaign message should be about. Not you. Not your troubles. Not your hardships.
Voters first and foremost what to know what you’ll do for them, the cause you you are going to advance, the problems you are going to solve, the evil you are going to conquer, the wrong you are going to right.
Only after hearing that will voters care about your story.
If your cause is compelling, voters will take an interest in your personal journey. If your cause is compelling, voters will even overlook mistakes you may have made or stupid things you once said or did.
