If you’ve kept up with the news this past week you have seen or heard the story about a 28 year old who defeated a 10 term Democrat Congressman in a New York political campaign. Her name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a woman who less than a year ago was working as a waitress.

No one took her seriously. Until she won.

She defeated a man many thought would someday become Speaker of the House. A man who raised 3 million dollars, outspent her 18 to 1, and lost. So dismissive was the smart set that not even the New York Times covered her campaign.

I don’t care if you are Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, there is something for all to learn from the campaign strategy she employed. Because she did not have the money to do thousands of glossy mail pieces, or other forms of conventional advertising, she resorted to the only thing she could do to get out her campaign message. She posted a video. One that she wrote herself. By election day it had been viewed more than 2 million times.

You’ll find a link to it here: The Courage to Change | Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

If you watch it, this is what you’ll notice. In less than 2 minutes, she talked about her background, told her story, her values, notions of right and wrong, her positions on issues important to her voters, and why her opponent deserved to be fired. An entire campaign message, and all of its elements, in less than two minutes, with footage shot on an iPhone, and disseminated on social media.

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with her views, you are allowed to learn from what she did, and how she won an election without spewing hate, or fanning the flames of racial division.

Going forward I’ll be doing more stories like this, and videos on how to win an election on a limited budget. If you’d like to receive them, please subscribe to my You Tube Channel.

Running for office and knowing how to win an election is a challenge, especially for first time political candidates just learning how to run for office. Discerning the fine points of how to campaign, raise political contributions, and execute a political campaign strategy often requires the help of someone who has served as a political strategist or who has experience as a political consultant.
