Last week, one of the lessons I teach in my Political Road Map Course, on running for office, was brought to life. In living color.

Hillary Clinton lost her temper. Needlessly so. And someone captured her 20 second temper tantrum on an iPhone, which then went viral, and made the pages of the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

Someone asked her about the contributions she has received from companies in the fossil fuel business. She angrily denied receiving any. That response prompted a series of stories about the money she has indeed received from people who work for fossil fuel companies, and fossil fuel lobbyists that have contributed thousands to her super pac. For her tantrum, she received barrels of bad ink, and a nasty viral video viewed by 2.5 million people. Whoops.
The episode underscores some important lessons, which even seasoned candidates sometimes forget: Campaigns require energy and stamina. Lots of it.
Some Townsend Tips for Taking Care of Yourself:
- Get the rest you need. When you are tired, you do not think well. When you don’t think well, you are more likely to make mistakes or become irritable. When you are irritable, little things will set you off, and that is dangerous in the world filled with iPhones.
- Stay hydrated. Keep water in the car, or make sure an aide has an ample supply nearby.
- Eat balanced meals. And take it easy on junk food. Too many calories or fatty fried foods will slow you down, and clod your head.
- Get regular exercise. Your mind will work better if you do. And you will have more energy. And you will look and feel better too.
- Take it easy on the alcohol. It will cloud your mind. It does affect your demeanor. You do not have full control of yourself when you have alcohol in your system, even if you think you do. Better yet, don’t drink at all. Then it will never affect your judgment.
- Nourish your mind and spirit during the campaign. That means an occasional day off the campaign trail. Some time with family. Some time for relaxation. Some time for reading. If you do not do these things, the campaign will wear you out. You’ll find it harder to smile. Harder to keep your posture up right. Harder to control your temper in difficult moments. Harder to speak diplomatically. Quicker to raise your voice when you should not.
Get some rest Hillary. You look angry.

How to win an election:
Running for office and knowing how to win an election is a challenge, especially for first time political candidates just learning how to run for office. Discerning the fine points of how to campaign, raise political contributions, and execute a political campaign strategy often requires the help of someone who has served as a political strategist or who has experience as a political consultant.
